After earlier being called up by the Guam national basketball team, Ilonggo guard Jericho Cruz was formally named to the squad set to compete in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers. They open the competition this weekend, February 23, against New Zealand at the University of Guam Calvo Field House
Their initial opener was supposed to be against Hong Kong last Thursday but the game was postponed due to the ongoing threat from the coronavirus disease, or Covid-19.
“Every player would want to play internationally,” the NLEX Road Warriors player reiterated . “One of my dreams was to play for the Philippines but luck isn’t on my side.”
“I’m blessed and honored to be a part of Guam’s national team,” he added.
Meanwhile, NLEX head coach Joseller ‘Yeng’ Guiao said his experience with the national team will help his game in the PBA.
“I think that’s going to help him,” he said. “That’s going to be a big honor for him.”
Earlier this month, Ilonggo guard Kiefer Ravena was named captain of the Philippine men’s national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, expected to compete in the qualifiers.
In addition, Bacolodnon center Justin Chua was also named to the squad.
The Gilas’ campaign also begins this weekend, February 23, against Indonesia at the BritAma Arena in Jakarta./ASC, WDJ
