San Beda ousts UST

San Beda University advanced to the next round of the 2020 Philippine Collegiate Champions League following their 77-68 win over the University of Santo Tomas (UST) on Saturday at the San Juan Arena. James Canlas led San Beda with 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and four steals; while Peter Alfaro added 13 points; and Bacolodnon guard Ralph Penuela chipped in 11.
San Beda led by as much as 17 points; however, before securing the win, UST narrowed the gap to 69-63 with just over three minutes left. Alfaro went on to help seal the win with an and-one conversion followed by baskets courtesy of Calvin Oftana.
“It was really tough; for my side, it was been tough,” said San Beda head coach Teodorico Fernandez III. “Malaking morale-booster sa amin ito beating UST (Beating UST was a big morale-booster).”
“At least may NCAA representative sa ‘Final Four’ (At least, there will be an NCAA representative in the ‘Final Four’),” he added.
Meanwhile, CJ Cansino led UST with 21 points and nine rebounds, Brent Paraiso added 12 points, Soulemane Chabi-Yo was held to six points and nine rebounds.
With the win, San Beda next faces the University of the Philippines on March 7./ASC, WDJ
