Bacolod City Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, who heads the city’s Solid Waste Action Team, yesterday disclosed the city will begin strictly implementing the “no segregation, no collection” policy effective March 1. He said construction of Cell No. 2 in the city’s sanitary landfill is already finished and the garbage dumped there must be segregated.
“The city has a sanitary landfill situated in Barangay Felisa but, due to non-compliance of the ‘no segregation, no collection policy,’ Cell No. 1 is now full and has become an open dump site, which prompted the city to construct the Cell No. 2,” he explained.
The vice mayor stressed, segregation is very important because of uncommon diseases that exists today.
“Proper waste disposal is very important because all bacteria are present there; possibly, the novel coronavirus can be acquired from it,” he asserted.
Familiaran revealed barangays will be monitored by the Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Environment Management Bureau to ensure their compliance and explained, if households do not comply, the barangay is task to segregate garbage because, under the law, the city must collect the residual waste.
Meanwhile, the vice mayor said they will conduct an information campaign regarding the implementation./DGB, WDJ
