A man who serves as backup driver for Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas was arrested for shooting a cow earlier this week at his home in Barangay Buhang in Iloilo City’s Jaro district. Police identified the suspect as 49-year-old Carlito Abonador, who is currently detained at the Jaro Police Station.
The suspect’s neighbor, Leira May Corral, the cow’s owner, tipped off authorities.
According to Jaro Police Station chief, Police Captain Eduardo Siacon, Abonador shot the cow dead out of frustration after his fighting cock died.
The suspect turned over the .99mm pistol used in the crime, along with his permit to carry, and admitted to the shooting.
Meanwhile, the police chief said they are currently looking into Abonador’s background to see if he may have another firearm.
“We have to check his record and, if he has another firearm, we have to conduct a police operation against him,” Siacon explained. “We are planning to apply for the revocation of his license.”
Charges for illegal discharge of a firearm, along with violations to RA 8485, or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, have since filed before the Iloilo City Prosecutor’s Office./WDJ
