Iloilo City native added to Guam roster
Ilonggo guard Jericho Cruz was recently called up by the Guam national basketball team to compete in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers. The first qualifying round begins on February 20, when they take on Hong Kong. The Iloilo City native, who currently plays for NLEX Road Warriors, said negotiations are ongoing to determine if he would be available for the game.
“Nag-uusap pa naman sila [NLEX Road Warriors team manager Ronald Dulatre] and [Guam national basketball team head coach Edward Calvo] kung papayagan ako (NLEX Road Warriors team manager Ronald Dulatre and Guam national basketball team head coach Edward Calvo are discussing whether I will be able to play for Guam),” the shooting guard said. “They need to consider a lot of things before they can finally decide.”
He also talked about his dreams of playing for the Philippine men’s national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas.
“Every player would want to play internationally,” Cruz said. “One of my dreams is to play for the Philippines but luck isn’t on my side.”
“I’m blessed and honored to be a part of Guam’s national team,” he added.
Cruz previously suited up for Guam during the 2009 FIBA Oceania Championship and the 2010 Micronesian Games./ASC, WDJ
