Amid ongoing seismic activity in Batangas following the eruption of the Taal Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology also detected three earthquakes across the Western Visayas over the past couple days.
A 2.0-magnitude quake was detected south of San Joaquin in Iloilo early Wednesday morning, striking around 3:49 a.m.; 15 minutes later, a 2.0-magnitude tremor struck just north of Sipalay City in Negros Occidental; then, yesterday morning, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake was felt near Cauayan, also in Negros Occidental, at 1:13 a.m.
The agency reported no damages as a result of the seismic activity nor were there any anticipated aftershocks.
Last month, a total of five earthquakes were recorded in and around Sipalay City between December 7 and 8, with the highest measuring 2.7 in magnitude.
A few days later, the city was struck by a minor 1.4-magnitude tremor.
Earthquakes that range between 3.0 and 3.9 in magnitude are considered between a Level II and III on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, where a few people feel the tremor, particularly those on the upper floors of buildings; while quakes ranging between 1.0 and 3.0 in magnitude are often classified as a Level 1, where the tremor goes almost undetected./WDJ
