Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, who chairs the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, called a meeting earlier this week to discuss providing assistance to the victims of the Taal volcanic eruption in Batangas.
After establishing the current number of displaced families as a result of the volcanic activity, the council said they will pass a resolution pertaining to the amount of financial assistance they will provide.
The resolution will then be submitted to the Sangguniang Panlungsod for approval.
Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines-Bacolod Public Information Officer Ofelia Leonardo said operations at Bacolod-Silay Airport are normal but they are continuing to monitor the ongoing volcanic activity.
Earlier this week, Negros Occidental Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer, who is currently serving as acting governor, said the province is ready to provide assistance to the victims of the volcanic eruption. He said the province has been “fully active in providing assistance to various parts of the country [that] were affected by natural disasters.”
The provincial official pointed out, “[It is] better that the province is the one helping and not the one that is being helped.”/WDJ
