Barangay Ginebra goes up 2-1
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel went up 2-1 in their 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup finals series against the Meralco Bolts after scoring a 92-84 win in Game 3 over the weekend at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. Justin Brownlee fell short of a triple-double for Ginebra with 24 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists; while Aguilar contributed 23 markers and seven blocks; Stanley Pringle added 21 points; and LA Tenorio contributed 11.
From a back-and-forth in the first two quarters, Barangay Ginebra opened the third with a 10-0 blast behind Tenorio, Brownlee, and Pringle, taking a 53-42 lead. Subsequent baskets from Pringle and Greg Slaughter increased their advantage further to 78-55, the largest lead of the game.
Into the fourth period, Meralco attempted to cut their deficit with baskets from Trevis Jackson but Barangay Ginebra answered with baskets from Brownlee and earned an 18-point advantage, 83-65. However, Meralco fought back and managed to narrow the gap to 87-82 but a three-pointer from Tenorio and an inside hit by Japeth Aguilar secured the win.
Despite the loss, Chris Newsome converted 24 points for Meralco; while Allen Durham chipped in 23 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists; while Bryan Faundo contributed 10 markers.
Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday, January 15, at the same venue./ASC, WDJ
