The Bacolod Master Sardines pulled off a 96-89 win over Basilan Steel last Saturday in the ongoing 2019-2020 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the San Juan Arena. Bacolodnon guard Nico Paolo Javelona led the win with 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists; while Jess Mar Villahermosa chipped in 15 markers; and Yankie Haruna and Jerick Canada each added 14.
“We’re not thinking of our chances,” said Bacolod head coach Vic Ycasiano. “What we’re doing right now is to play and enjoy, also to win as much as we can.”
After seeing their seven-point lead turned into a 77-75 deficit, Bacolod earned some timely conversions from Haruna and Benedict Adamos and made it a six-point edge. Basilan then made their final push and trimmed the deficit to two points but three-pointers from Canada and Javelona put the Bacolodnon side up 89-81.
Despite the loss, Allyn Bulanadi dropped 33 points for Basilan.
The win moved the Bacolod Master Sardines to 11th place in the Southern Division, which keeps them in contention for a spot in the “Top Eight.”/ASC, WDJ
