A barangay kagawad was killed Saturday night after he was gunned down by unidentified gunmen at a compound in Bacolod City’s Barangay 26. Police identified the fatality as 33-year-old Barangay 2 Kagawad Romeo Canlas, Jr.
Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) spokesperson, Police Lt. Colonel Ariel Pico, said Canlas visited the compound, which is owned by another kagawad, for a night of drinking after spending the day at a cockfighting arena.
As the victim and seven others were drinking, several armed men stormed the compound and opened fire.
Pico said they initially believed there were six gunmen but the number went down to three following interviews with several witnesses.
The suspects then boarded a waiting Mitsubishi Montero and sped away from the scene.
Canlas was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment but was declared dead on arrival by hospital staff.
Based on a statement given by Barangay 26 Kagawad Reno Dellarna to police, as the suspects broke into the compound, one of the gunmen first asked for the whereabouts of a certain ‘Ferlin.’
The suspects then ordered Dellarna and the others to lie down on the floor before opening fire on Canlas.
Police have yet to establish the motive behind the killing, although they believe it is possible Canlas may have been tailed by the suspects for some time./DGB, WDJ
