Public reminded to sort waste
With Clean-up Week observed every second week of January, the Philippine Information Agency reminded the public to sort waste.
“Waste sorting is the first step in waste management,” they noted in a social media post. “Proper waste segregation with clearly-marked containers for different kinds of waste and well-understood recycling procedures can save space, time, money, and effort.”
The observance was established by Proclamation No. 187, signed in 1963 by then-President Diosdado Macapagal. The policy amended an earlier proclamation signed by then-President Elpidio Quirino, which set the week-long observance in November.
According to the earlier policy, Clean-up Week was created in order to raise awareness of “the importance of cleanliness and so that public health and sanitation may be placed on a higher level.”/WDJ
