Two earthquakes struck Negros Oriental on January 1 with a 3.0-magnitude quake striking north of Valencia at 12:37 p.m., while another 3.0-magnitude tremor was detected off the coast of Basay at 1:54 p.m.
According to subsequent bulletins released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, there were no damages reported as a result of the seismic activity nor were there any aftershocks anticipated.
Earthquakes that range between 3.0 and 3.9 in magnitude are considered between a Level II and III on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, where a few people feel the tremor, particularly those on the upper floors of buildings.
Towards the end of last month, three earthquakes struck the southern portion of Negros in one day with the first tremor, which measured 2.0 in magnitude, detected just north of Jimalalud in Negros Oriental; a 2.1-magnitude quake was later recorded south of Hinoba-an in Negros Occidental; and a 2.5-magnitude earthquake then struck south of Mabinay, Negros Oriental./WDJ
