After the results of the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment, a study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development that evaluates education systems, were recently released, which found, out of 79 countries, the Philippines finished last place in reading comprehension, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones said the country is unable to adapt another curriculum.
“We can’t just adapt the Singapore curriculum or any other international best practice,” she noted during a television interview.
Notably, China, Singapore, and Macau topped the category.
The assessment averaged scores of 487 in reading comprehension, 489 in mathematics, and 489 in science; meanwhile, the Philippines tallied 340, 353, and 357, respectively.
Earlier this year, in response to Congress pushing bills to eliminate homework, DepEd announced their support for the move.
In a statement, the division noted: “The no-homework policy enables our learners to find balance between their academic development and personal growth by having ample time for enjoyable activities with family.”
According to the bill before the House, which was introduced by Sorsogon first district Rep. Evelina Escudero, “Homework assignments can deprive students and parents precious quality time for rest, relaxation, and interaction.”/WDJ
