Bacolod City Councilor Wilson Gamboa, Jr. is currently lobbying for the ordinance seeking to ban the entry of hogs and pork products from areas currently affected by the African swine fever. The city official, who authored the proposal, pointed out, even if Mayor Evelio Leonardia issued an executive order forming a task force on swine fever, the ordinance would strengthen the campaign.
In addition, the city councilor revealed the anti-swine fever ordinance passed by the Negros Occidental Provincial Board and other localities served as the basis for the city’s anti-swine fever ordinance.
Under the proposed ordinance, the city’s anti-swine fever task force would be in charge of preventing the importation and sale of hogs and pork products from areas affected by African swine fever.
Earlier, city agriculturist, Atty. Goldwyn Nifras, who heads the city’s anti-African swine fever task force, recommended a ban on the importation of pork into the city amid ongoing matters surrounding African swine fever.
With Christmas parties being celebrated across the city, Nifras earlier assured consumers they have nothing to fear as the city remains free of swine fever./DGB, WDJ
