Filipino hurdler wins gold in photo finish

Filipino hurdler Clinton Bautista won the men’s 100-meter hurdles event earlier this week at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games by a photo finish, edging out Malaysia’s Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian at the New Clark City Athletics Center in Capaz, Tarlac. The two clocked in at 13.97 seconds but Bautista was found to have come in first by a centimeter.
In addition, Bautista, a former Far Eastern University standout, also won bronze in the men’s 4×100 meter relay alongside Anfernee Lopena, Francis Medina, and Eric Cray.
In other athletics events, Melvin Calano won gold in men’s javelin throw; Kayla Richardson, Kyla Richardson, Zion Nelson, and Kristina Knott took silver in the women’s 4×100 relay; Carter James won silver in the men’s 800-meters; Sonny Wagdos captured bronze in the men’s 5,000-meters; and Joida Gagnao, a Guimaras native, finished third in the women’s 5,000-meters.
Among contact sports, Jason Baucas and Noel Norada won gold in men’s Greco-Roman wrestling in the 72-kg and 63-kg events, respectively, while Margarito Angana, Jr. won silver in the 60-kg division and Jason Balabal captured silver in the 87-kg division, along with Jefferson Manantad winning bronze in the 77-kg division. Meanwhile, Jerry Olsim was the Philippines’ sole gold medal in kickboxing, while Renalyn Dacquez won silver and Jomar Balangui took bronze.
The taekwondo events also named winners in the kyorugi events, which is a demonstration of sparring. Kurt Barbosa won gold in the men’s finweight division, Rheza Aragon took silver in women’s flyweight division, Kurt Pajuelas captured bronze in the men’s bantamweight division, Dex Chavez won bronze in the men’s flyweight, Baby Jessica Canabal took bronze in the women’s bantamweight division, and Veronica Garces finished third in the women’s finweight division.
In other sports, Geylord Coveta and Yancy Kaibigan each captured gold in wind surfing; Raymark Begornia, Jemyca Aribado, Robert Garcia, and William David won in squash in the mixed team event, while Begornia, Garcia, David, and Christopher Buraga won silver in the men’s team event as Aribado, Yvonne Alyssa Dalida, and Jimmie Avila took bronze in the women’s team event; Dennis Orcollo captured gold in billiards in the 10-ball pool singles; the Philippine men’s trap team comprised of Eric Ang, Carlos Carag, and Alexander Topacio won gold in shooting; Jewel Napa added a silver in skateboarding;  BMX rider Daniel Caluag won silver; swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldi won bronze in the women’s 100-meter freestyle; and Luke Gebbie took bronze in the men’s 50-meter freestyle.
