The Philippine women’s volleyball team finished fourth place in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games after falling 25-20, 24-26, 25-15, 20-25, 16-14 last night to Indonesia in the bronze medal match at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Trailing by a set heading into the fourth, Ejiya Laure, Mika Reyes, Frances Molina, and Jovelyn Gonzaga took turns in offense for the Philippines to build a double-digit lead before having to survive a late rally by Indonesia to force a decider.
In the fifth set, the Philippines seemed headed to completing a come-from-behind win with Laure, Reyes and Mylene Paat connecting crucial points to establish a 14-12 advantage. However, the Indonesians chipped away at their deficit and brought the match to a 14-all count before completing the turnaround with two additional points.
The Philippine women’s volleyball team has not made the podium since 2005./ASC, WDJ
