The Philippine women’s national football team, the Maditas, fell short of capturing a medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games after falling 2-1 to Myanmar in the bronze medal match over the weekend at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
After a scoreless first half, Quinley Quezada put the Philippines up 1-0 with a close-range conversion in the 57th minute. Afterwards, they almost saw that lead double but the shot by fellow forward Sarina Bolden was ruled offiside.
Late in the second half, Myanmar found themselves ahead following two successive goals after striker July Kyaw scored in the 78th minute, followed by forward Yee Yee Oo finding the back of the net in the 80th minute.
The Philippines has not won a SEA Games medal in women’s football since capturing bronze in 1985.
Meanwhile, Vietnam won their sixth gold medal after beating Thailand, 1-0.
After the initial 90 minutes ended with a 0-0 draw, striker Phạm Hải Yến scored the decisive goal for Vietnam in the first period of extra time./ASC, WDJ
