Filipino boxer Jerwin Ancajas retained his International Boxing Federation world super flyweight belt after a sixth round stoppage win over Chilean fighter Miguel Gonzales over the weekend at the Auditorio GNP Seguros in Puebla, Mexico. The victory marked his eighth successful title defense since first capturing the championship after beating Puerto Rican boxer McJoe Arroyo last 2016 in Taguig City’s Fort Bonifacio.
Ancajas showed his worth early on as he immediately punished Gonzales with punches to the head and body. The Chilean replied with aggressiveness but it was not enough to hurt Ancajas. By the fifth round, he began showing weakness, which Ancajas took advantage of and unloaded more combinations.
The Cavite City-based boxer went for the kill in the sixth as he connected several hooks and crosses to the head, prompting referee Waybe Hedgpeth to end the bout at the 1:53 mark.
Ancajas was initially slated to fight Mexican fighter Jonathan Javier Rodriguez last November 3 in California; however, according to Top Rank Promotions, the latter was unable to travel to the US due to visa issues, which resulted in him failing to complete his medical requirement.
With the win, Ancajas improved to a 32-1-2 win-loss-draw record, including 22 stoppage victories; while Gonzalez dropped to a 31-3-0 record with eight win via stoppages./ASC, WDJ
