The United Nations recognizes every December 5 as International Volunteer Day, which intends to promote the contributions volunteers have made to their respective communities.
“Volunteerism is a powerful mechanism to engage people, especially those left farthest behind,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “When people volunteer they connect with others and foster a sense of purpose.”
“On this year’s International Volunteers Day, I thank all volunteers from around the world who make the world a more inclusive and tolerant place,” he added.
According to the resolution enacting the observance, governments around the world are urged to “take measures to heighten awareness of the important contribution of volunteer service,” which they believe will encourage more volunteerism./WDJ
