The Philippine women’s beach volleyball team saw their 2019 Southeast Asian Games medal hopes in peril following their 26-24, 25-15 loss to Thailand yesterday in Subic, Zambales. The Philippines’ Cherry Rondina and Negrense outside hitter Bernadeth Pons fell to Thai pair Varapatsorn Radarong and Khanittha Hongpak.
Meanwhile, another Philippine pair, Angelique Gervacio and Dij Rodriguez, suffered a 21-16, 21-14 loss to opponents Tanarattha Udomchavee and Rumpaipruet Numwong.
With a 2-2 record, the Philippines’ next match against Singapore is a must-win to stay in bronze medal contention.
“Alam naming lalaban at lalaban ‘yang Singapore (We know Singapore will put up a fight),” said Rondina. “Pero siyempre, ‘di tayo papatalo d’yan; medalya na pag-uusapan d’yan (Of course, we will not lose; we’re talking about a medal).”/ASC, WDJ
