The Philippines swept the Southeast Asian Games 3×3 basketball competitions yesterday at the San Juan Arena. The men’s team scored a 21-9 win over Indonesia to capture gold, while the women’s team pulled off a 17-13 victory over Thailand.
Jaymar Perez led the men’s team early on before Chris Newsome, Jason Perkins, and Moala Tautuaa made their hits. The Philippines jumped to a quick double-digit edge behind consecutive points from Perez, including a one-hander dunk.
Tautuaa then capped the victory with an outside shot.
Meanwhile, the women’s team leaned on Afril Bernardino, who surged the team to a double-digit edge. Thailand then rallied to within 17-13 but a crucial block by Bernardino iced the win.
Also part of the Patrick Aquino-mentored side were Claire Castro, Jack Animam, and Janine Pontejos./ASC, WDJ
