As a way to promote Negros Occidental being an African Swine Fever (ASF)-free province, a lechon eating will be held today at the Capitol’s Social Hall as Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer officially sign Provincial Ordinance No. 2019-024, otherwise known as “The ASF Prevention Ordinance of Negros Occidental.”
Dr. Renante Decena, head of the Provincial Veterinary Office, said alongside lechon eating, they will also distribute gift certificates, sample of locally-made hams, and other pork products which will be the highlight of the declaration of an ASF-free province.
Decena also pointed out that local pork consumption declined from 20 to 30 percent after Luzon’s declaration of ASF infiltration in some of its areas.
“It is incumbent upon government intervention after we are declared free from ASF,” Decena added. “But now we have recovered and based on record, the increase in prices of beef, chicken, and eggs by an average of more than P1 per piece contributes to higher pork consumption.”
Decena also revealed that since November 15, local pork consumption has started to increase.
About eight pieces of lechon will be served today to be shared by all stakeholders, department heads, members of the provincial board, task force members, media and hog raisers, Decena added.
Board member Pal Guanzon, sponsor of Ordinance No. 1042 Series of 2019 declaring Negros as ASF-free province, pushed for the holding of lechon eating today to get rid of public’s fear on ASF./DGB, WDJ
