The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) formally turned over a total of P58.1 million worth of checks to the Commission on Education (CHED) yesterday at the Zuri Hotel in Iloilo City’s Mandurriao district.
“Under sa memorandum of agreement, gagamitin po nila ito sa health programs ng CHED and other programs that would improve the education quality ng institutions (Under a memorandum of agreement, CHED will use the funds for health programs, among other initiatives, that would improve the quality of education as their institutions),” explained PCSO General Manager Royina Garma.
The turnover is compliant with RA 7722, or the Higher Education Act of 1994, which requires PCSO to provide one percent of their equivalent gross sales from lottery earnings to CHED.
Garma noted, the amount is one percent of three months worth of gross sales.
CHED-Region VI director IV, Dr. Maura Consolacion D. Cristobal, who received the funds on behalf of CHED Chairman Proposero E. De Vera III, affirmed the PCSO funds allow the commission to strengthen institutions of higher education across the country.
Since the policy was enacted, PCSO has provided P2.4 billion to CHED./WDJ
