The 82nd UAAP basketball season recently saw Negrense players taking Rookie of the Year titles with University of Santo Tomas (UST) point guard Mark Nonoy, a native of La Carlota City, and Kent Jane Pastrana, a Victorias City native who plays for De La Salle University (DLSU), winning this year’s honors.
Nonoy, who led UST to the second round of the men’s semifinals, averaged 10 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists this season.
“What we need to do now is to win,” he said. “We have the awards but we have to win every game because [the championship] is the award we really want.”
UST will face the University of the Philippines (UP), who have a twice-to-beat advantage, beginning this weekend, November 10.
“We’ll have to do our best to win against UP,” the former Hua Siong College of Iloilo standout added.
Meanwhile, Pastrana emerged as the leading scorer for DLSU this season.
