Western Visayas residents urged to get vaccinated against polio

The Department of Health-Region VI (DOH-6) urged local residents to get vaccinated against polio. DOH-6 medical officer, Dr. Mary Jane Juanico, said there is no other way to protect one’s self from the virus except getting inoculated.
The DOH-6 official said local residents should visit their nearest local health center and take an oral polio vaccine.
She also pointed out, polio is a serious disease as it can cause death, especially among children.
According to the US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, polio, or poliomyelitis, is a crippling and potentially deadly infectious disease. It is caused by the poliovirus. The virus spreads from person to person and can invade an infected person’s brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis./DGB, WDJ
