Petition opposing the move garners over 10K signatures
The Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution calling on the City Engineer’s Office to consider the removal of traffic islands along Narra Avenue, Narra Extension, and Tindalo Avenue in Bacolod City’s Shopping area. City Councilor Dindo Ramos, who penned the resolution, called the structures “outdated” and claimed its removal would “maximize road use” and “ease traffic congestion.”
The city official also noted, “Traditional and creative solutions have been instituted to improve the overall traffic conditions in this city.”
Meanwhile, city residents started a change.org petition called “Save the Center Islands of Trees in Bacolod,” which has garnered over 10,000 signatures.
The petition primarily focuses on the need for more greenery in the city.
“Plants and trees are good for our well-being,” the petition reads. “Bacolod City needs more plants and trees in commercial areas to lower the temperature, provide fresh air, and diminish flooding.”
The petition also challenges Ramos’ claims that traffic islands cause congestion and noted they “prevent accidents” and “prevent traffic because of ‘counterflow.’”
Meanwhile, Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia said he plans to consult the Department of Environment and Natural Resources with regard to the trees and said the city must find a suitable suit for replanting once the structures are removed./DGB, WDJ
