After earlier securing qualification for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games by making the finals of the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo captured gold over the weekend by winning in floor exercise.
During the qualification round, Yulo came in seventh in the floor exercise, where he scored a 14.633. However, in the finals, he scored a 15.300, ahead of Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat in second place and Xiao Ruoteng of China in third.
Notably, at 19 years old, the Filipino gymnast was the youngest competitor in the event.
Meanwhile, his all-around ranking also jumped, up from 18th in the qualifying round to finishing in 10th place.
Yulo is the second Filipino athlete to qualify for the Summer Games, which begin in Tokyo, Japan on July 24, 2020, following pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena, who surpassed the 5.80-meter Olympic qualifying standard after registering 5.81 meters at a meet last month in Chiara, Italy./ASC, WDJ
