An official from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently urged lawmakers in Negros to help local government units in constructing sanitary landfills.
DENR-Western Mindanao Assistant Secretary for Field Operations Jim Sampulna, who visited Bacolod City yesterday morning, said the construction of sanitary landfills is part of the mandate by President Rodrigo Duterte to fully-implement RA 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
He explained, many local government units are encountering difficulties in implementing the law due to the lack of funding.
The DENR official believes every congressional district should have its own sanitary landfill.
Sampulna added, Duterte also issued a warning to local government units and said they will face penalties if they are shown to have broken environmental laws./DGB, WDJ
