Globe Telecom recently voiced their concern over the ongoing matter of pirated content, particularly on the internet. Globe Telecom Vice President for Content Portfolio and Partner Management Jill Go pointed out, the firm has seen a 50 percent increase in internet traffic with 18 percent of it attributed to the consumption of illegal content.
“This is theft that’s actually going around unchecked,” she stated. “There’s no regulatory teeth to actually put them behind bars.”
Earlier this year, international market research and data analytics firm YouGov conducted a study on television viewing habits of Filipino consumers and found around 28 percent utilize devices intended to stream pirated content.
Such devices, also known as illicit streaming devices, often come with applications allowing access to pirated content. Some of the popular applications include Showbox, CloudTV, FunTV, and Hug U Box.
Go noted, by providing access to various internet services, they are “providing consumers with legal options to consume content.”
“Globe Telecom sees it as a responsibility to help shape the regulations in terms of creating rules or laws that can really put into place some teeth in terms of curbing piracy,” she added./WDJ
