According to Engr. Yvan Rosales of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) Visayas Transmission Planning Department, the power firm’s recent development, a 230-kilovolt (kV) Cebu-Negros-Panay backbone project, which is expected to be completed by December 2020, is needed to address the excess power being generated in the local area.
“There is excess power now [being] generated by existing power generation plants, not to mention those new power supplies from new generation facilities,” he explained. “We can really see the need for the 230kV Backbone project.”
Despite the reported “excess,” NGCP-Negros operations head, Engr. Zosimo Briones, said there are still power plants being planned in Negros and Panay that are subject to permit evaluations.
He also anticipated more renewable energy plants to be established.
The backbone projects seeks to address the “excess power” by limiting the transfer capacity of the existing Cebu-Negros 138kV submarine cable./WDJ
