Negros Occidental will reportedly be supplying Boracay with pork. Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has since confirmed Cebu earlier allowed for live pigs from Negros to enter their province.
According to the governor, Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) head, Dr. Renante Decena, is now coordinating with Aklan’s provincial veterinarian on the matter. He also noted, Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores learned of the province’s pork surplus during a recent meeting.
Decena said Negros has a surplus of about 4,000 pigs per month.
He noted, last Friday, 70 live pigs were delivered to Cebu after the Cebu provincial government acknowledged PVO for backyard raisers.
The provincial official added, live pigs are sold at P85 per kilogram.
Meanwhile, Decena also encouraged local producers to invest in processed pork products.
“We can supply for local demand of pork and we even have a surplus,” he explained. “That’s why we should not worry that we ban pork and processed pork products from Luzon and other areas.”
Amid the ongoing ban, the provincial government’s anti-African swine fever task force seized 27 kilograms of pork siopao arriving from Manila last Sunday at Bacolod-Silay Airport.
Decena urged the public to not bring pork or processed pork products into the province citing questionable “processing methods.”
“Even a gram of contaminated processed pork product could affect our pigs,” he added.
Officials have refused to reveal the owner of the seized siopao./DGB, WDJ
