The Caticlan Jetty Port, which offers access to resort island Boracay, has urged visitors to refrain from bringing in canned or processed meat products amid the ongoing issue surrounding African swine fever. While no cases have been reported on the island or in Aklan, authorities are trying to prevent the virus from spreading.
According to officials, visitors often bring canned or processed food with them as a cheaper alternative to the food available at the vacation hotspot.
Meanwhile, authorities said visitors will be able to purchase canned and processed food at local stores as they were subject to “strict security screenings.”
Last week, the Negros Occidental Provincial Veterinary Office was placed on heightened alert after the Department of Agriculture earlier confirmed hog samples taken from pig farms in Luzon tested positive for African swine fever.
The Department of Agriculture was also reported to have already culled hundreds of hogs in the affected areas in a bid to prevent the virus from further spreading./WDJ
