A vegetable vendor was killed Tuesday afternoon in Toboso after he was slashed by a man believed to be suffering from mental illness.
Police identified the fatality as 51-year-old Roberto Peruma, a resident of Barangay Hinup-ay in Calatrava.
Toboso municipal police chief, Police Major Joery Puerto, said the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Argie Pasigna, attacked Peruma while the latter was selling vegetables.
Authorities said the suspect used a machete and he repeatedly slashed Peruma.
The suspect was later stopped by several residents, although Peruma was already dead.
Puerto said the suspect nearly mutilated the victim and residents reported the assailant was attempting to “chop the victim to bits.”
The suspect’s mother, meanwhile, told police Pasigna suffers from mental illness and had not taken his medicine at the time of the incident.
Police plan to file murder charges against Pasigna, who is now detained at the Toboso Municipal Police Station./DGB, WDJ
