Following an authorization approved by the Iloilo City Council, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is gearing up to sign a memorandum of agreement with Smart Telecommunications and Globe Telecom to bring free Wi-Fi to public offices, parks, plazas, and certain streets.
“The partnerships are a big help for us in our quest to become a ‘Smart City,’” he said. “I am very excited with this as we will be giving the public more access to avail of services and for us to better serve them.”
The city anticipates Wi-Fi accessibility at City Hall, district plazas, the Iloilo River Esplanade, and along Diversion Road in the city’s Mandurriao district.
Last month, the Iloilo City government announced, amid plans to provide faster services to city residents, they will be partnering with Smart Communications to bring innovative technology to the city, including access to a mobile payment option.
“They will introduce a mobile payment application,” said Treñas. “They are going to partner with us in our quest to become a ‘Smart City’ and I am very excited.”
Meanwhile, last year, the Iloilo Provincial Tourism Office launched their quick response (QR) code, which, when clicked, will provide information about tourist attractions across the province.
A total of 20 Iloilo locales were among the first batch to receive the code. Codes were placed at city halls or municipal halls, where visitors would be able to scan the code on their smartphones and immediately pull up information about the area’s cultural, historical, and man-made sites./WDJ
