San Beda University scored a 69-60 win over Mapúa University last week in the 95th NCAA men’s basketball season at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
Calvin Oftana tallied a double-double for San Beda with 24 points and 12 rebounds; while Donald Tankoua flirted with triple-double on 10 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists; and James Canlas added 10 markers.
Despite the win, San Beda committed 17 turnovers, which allowed Mapúa to remain within striking distance before tightening their defense down the stretch to pull off the victory.
“It’s really a lesson for everyone, especially for my players,” said San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez. “You really have to prepare for every game and don’t underestimate any of the teams.”
In the other games, San Sebastian College-Recoletos cruised to their fourth straight victory with an 86-79 win over Arellano University, while Colegio de San Juan de Letran pulled off an 88-64 win over De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde./ASC, WDJ
