Police Regional Office-6 (PRO-6) spokesperson, Police Lt. Colonel Joem Malong, yesterday affirmed five local convicts released under RA 10592, an amendment to the Revised Penal Code referred to as the “Good Conduct Time Allowance Law,” have surrendered to authorities.
According to Malong, the first convict to surrender was a 57-year-old man only identified by the alias ‘Dale,’ who reportedly submitted himself to the Culasi Police Station in Antique last week. He was followed by alias ‘Paolo,’ who surrendered to the Tangalan Police Station in Aklan; and alias ‘Kent,’ who gave himself up to Dingle police.
All three face murder charges and were booked by local police.
Meanwhile, two other convicts, identified as aliases ‘Ben’ and ‘Buloy’ yielded to Pavia and Leganes police, respectively.
Malong said those who surrendered were later allowed to return home temporarily with the promise they will cooperate with police.
The PRO-6 spokesperson added, they are presently waiting for Bureau of Corrections guidelines on how they will be transported to their respective correctional facilities in order to serve the remainder of their prison sentences.
The good conduct law recently came to light after it was revealed convicted rapist-murderer Antonio Sanchez, former mayor of Calauan, Laguna, was set to be released for “good conduct.”
He was sentenced to seven life sentences for the murder of two University of the Philippines-Los Baños students in 1995. One of the victims was also reportedly raped by Sanchez and his henchmen.
President Rodrigo Duterte later ordered Sanchez to remain in prison as the law was temporarily suspended pending an amendment by lawmakers./DGB, WDJ
