The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) recently led the 10th anniversary celebration of RA 9710, or the Magna Carta of Women, the law that sought to recognize “the economic, political, and sociocultural realities affecting women’s current condition.”
Around 500 individuals from various government and non-governmental agencies joined the gathering earlier this month at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
According to a PCW social media post, “While much [has] been achieved, more can still be done to eliminate discrimination, uphold women’s rights, and empower every ‘Juana.’”
The Magna Carta of Women, signed in 2009 by then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, condemned discrimination against women and affirmed “women’s rights as human rights.”
“All individuals are equal as human beings by virtue of the inherent dignity of each human person,” the law reads. “No one, therefore, should suffer discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, gender, age, language, sexual orientation, race, color, religion, political, or other opinion, national, social, or geographical origin, disability, property, birth, or other status as established by human rights standards.”/WDJ
