Carlo Caesar Peñalosa of San Carlos City lost his International Boxing Organization world flyweight championship bout over the weekend, falling to Mexican boxer Maximino Flores at the TV5 Studio in Quezon City.
Flores was the early aggressor as he unleashed a flurry of punches after catching Peñalosa on the ropes. The Pinoy boxer replied with several solid hits.
Later in the bout, Peñalosa landed a sneaky left straight but it did not appear to affect his opponent.
In the third round, following a head butt that was deemed accidental, Peñalosa suffered a cut to his left brow.
Flores continued to smother Peñalosa in the fifth by putting his head down and moving forward.
By the sixth round, the match was halted due to the Filipino fighter’s cut but, after a doctor observed the injury, he was permitted to continue. However, in the eighth round, the fight was officially stopped after the cut had reportedly worsened.
With the defeat, Penalosa dropped to a 14-2-0 win-loss-draw ring record, including seven stoppage wins; while Flores improved to a 25-4-1 boxing slate with 18 knockout wins./ASC, WDJ
