The Bacolod City Health Office (CHO) said there has been a drop in the number of leptospirosis cases in the city. According to records provided by the CHO, from January to August 10, there have been 13 cases recorded this year, which is down from the 17 reported during the same period last year—a 23.5 percent decline.
The department also reported two fatalities this year related to the bacterial infection, down from the three recorded last year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can be contracted through the urine of infected animals. Humans often become infected when coming in contact with contaminated water or soil.
“The bacteria can enter the body through skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth), especially if the skin is broken from a cut or scratch,” the CDC notes on their website. “Drinking contaminated water can also cause infection.”
CHO advised the public to avoid exposing themselves in flood waters or wear protective clothing, along with boots, in order to not contract the infection.
Last week, the city’s Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution calling for intensified information and education campaigns on leptospirosis./DGB, WDJ
