Police: The neighborhood is a ‘hot bed’ for robberies

A suspected mugger was shot dead yesterday morning by a security guard after victimizing a college student at the corner of Araneta Avenue and Alijis Road in Bacolod City’s Barangay Singcang-Airport. Police identified the fatality as 39-year-old Arnold Genevera, a resident of Calong-calong Zone 1 in the said barangay.
Police Station 8 (PS8) commander, Police Major Charles Gever, said the 19-year-old victim, who has requested anonymity, was waiting for a bus bound for Hinigaran. As she was crossing the street, she bumped into Genevera, who immediately pointed his .38 caliber revolver and declared a hold-up.
The suspect forced the victim to yield her mobile phone worth P7,000. She then tried to flee and fell down, which drew the attention of a nearby security guard.
Genevera attempted to rob another commuter but they fought back, forcing the suspect to abandon the attempt and escape towards the old Bacolod Airport. The guards and several male commuters immediately gave chase until one of the guards drew his 9mm service pistol and shot twice.
The guards and commuters later abandoned the chase when they lost contact and proceeded to inform police of the incident.
Police later spotted the suspect dead by the roadside inside a subdivision.
Authorities added, the area has been noted to be a ‘hot bed’ for robberies as suspects often cross the runway as an escape route./DGB, WDJ
