The Philippine men’s national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, beat Ivory Coast anew in the Torneo de Malaga over the weekend, pulling off a 73-63 win at the Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena in Málaga, Spain.
With the win, the Philippines ended the competition in third place.
Robert Bolick, Jr. earned 19 points, including shooting 8-of-8 from the free throw line; Andray Blatche added a double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds; along with Paul Lee and Japeth Aguilar each contributing nine points.
Bolick and Blatche set the tone for Gilas as they combined for 11 first quarter points to take a slim 17-13 edge. The two produced the same output in the second period as the national team increased the lead to 39-29 at the half. Both teams maintained the tempo in the second half with Lee and Aguilar pushing the Philippines to a 52-42 third quarter edge, and eventually securing the victory.
Ahead of their win, Gilas fell 82-71 to Congo. A win would have set up a potential meeting with Spain./ASC, WDJ
