The Negros Occidental Provincial Science and Technology Center is encouraging graduating senior high schools students to apply for the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) scholarship for undergraduates. The program is geared towards students from low-income families who plan on taking up coursework in the science and technology fields.
The program is based on RA 7687, or the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994, which, according to the law, seeks to “strengthen the country’s science and technology manpower by creating a pool of scientists, engineers, and technicians who shall fill the needs of industrialization.”
Eligible students must be natural-born Filipino citizens; a graduate of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) strand or among the top five percent of a non-STEM strand; uphold good moral character; and in good health.
In addition, they must also be pursuing their studies at a state university or college; center of excellence or center of development; institution with Level III accreditation from the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines; or DOST-SEI-identified network institution.
Scholarship beneficiaries will be provided funding for tuition, fees, book allowance, physical education uniform, insurance, transportation, stipend, and graduation clothing allowance.
Upon completion of their coursework, they will also be required to “render service in the country.”/WDJ
