Negros Occidental Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) President Juvy Pepillo, who sits on the Provincial Board, said she supports the proposed postponement of the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, which are scheduled for May 2020. She said officials who were elected during the previous May 2018 polls still need to “prove themselves” and “perform.”
“As barangay captains we need a longer term for us to perform,” she explained.
The provincial official said a one-and-a-half year term is only enough time to make plans.
“That is what President Rodrigo Duterte want,” Pepillo added.
During his State Of the Nation Address last Monday, Duterte asked Congress to postpone the upcoming Barangay and SK elections and said a longer term for current barangay officials will allow them to finish their programs and projects.
Commission on Elections Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said they are currently in the process of preparing for the election and noted, “When Congress passes a law, we will follow it.”/DGB, WDJ
