The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) recently publicized their activities in observance of this year’s Philippine Environment Month, which is celebrated every June. Among their deeds this year included a tree planting by employees and volunteers of the corporation Southern Negros Geothermal Project.
The tree planting, which took place at the project’s Ticala administrative complex in Valencia, Negros Oriental, saw 300 trees, including 96 native species, planted by various participants, including Philippine National Police personnel.
Last week, the Iloilo City government conducted a tree planting activity where some 7,000 seedlings were planted as part of a flood control project in Barangay Buhang, located in the city’s Jaro district.
Trees were also planted along Circumferential Road.
“Tree planting is [a] mitigation [tactic] against climate change,” explained Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas. “We will undertake [a] sustainable tree planting program.”
Philippine Environment Month originated through Presidential Proclamation No. 237, signed by then-President Corazon Aquino in 1988.
The policy indicated Philippine Environment Month was derived from World Environment Day, which the United Nations observes every June 5.
“The observance of World Environment Day in the country is not only a gesture of Philippine support to the cause of enhancing world ecology, but also a recognition of the imperative need to instill environmental awareness and concern among the various sectors of the Philippine society.” the proclamation read./WDJ
