Classes suspended in Iloilo City

With Tropical Depression Falcon bringing heavy rains to the region, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas yesterday declared classes suspended on all levels yesterday.
In a press release, the mayor said, with a forecasted rainfall of 21.9 millimeters, “Pre-school children, elementary pupils, high school and senior high school [students], considered [an] exposed and vulnerable population, should be protected from the possible effects of strong winds and heavy rainfall.”
“The cancellation of classes seeks to ensure the safety of our children from possible flooding and from any sickness, injuries, or accidents as a result thereof,” he added.
Last week, the Iloilo City government conducted a tree planting activity where some 7,000 seedlings are expected to be planted as part of a flood control project in Barangay Buhang, located in the city’s Jaro district.
Trees were also planted along Circumferential Road.
“Tree planting is [a] mitigation [tactic] against climate change,” Treñas explained.
