The Iloilo City government is currently looking at several options in terms of tamping down on the ongoing vandalism problem along the Iloilo River Esplanade. Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said he is considering measures such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera surveillance, increased police presence, along with vehicles in order to pursue assailants.
“If there are savings, we will buy motorcycles and bikes because the police [are] requesting additional vehicles,” the mayor explained. “We ask [for] police [to] help in securing public property.”
“We are also looking into the possibility of installing CCTV cameras [along the] Esplanade,” he added.
Aside from graffiti, vandals have also uprooted ornamental plants.
Earlier this week, the city government called on the local public to capture those responsible for such actions. City Hall is requesting individuals to take pictures and/or videos of people intentionally destroying landscapes and report the matter to authorities.
Meanwhile, Treñas said he is planning to deploy personnel to certain areas to monitor the situation.
“We will deploy workers to watch over [the] Iloilo River Esplanade and plazas because there are many traces of vandals [at those locations],” the mayor said./WDJ
