Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said he has sought assistance from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Authority (TIEZA) to rehabilitate and restore the Plaza Jaro.
“We sent a letter to TIEZA asking for P40 million [in] funding for the project,” the mayor said. “We hope the budget will be approved soon.”
“We want to have the best plaza in Western Visayas,” he added.
Treñas added, plazas in the city’s La Paz and Mandurriao districts also have improvement plans.
During the administration of former Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III, an executive order was issued calling for the removal of illegal structures, which includes kiosks selling ‘ukay-ukay,’ or second-hand clothing retailers, from Plaza Jaro.
According to the former mayor, following an inspection of the area, it was revealed there were unauthorized electrical connections made to the city government line./WDJ
