“…So, I said, ‘Wisdom is better than strength’…” –Ecclesiastes 9:16
Members of Rotary International chapters in the Philippines are acclaimed for starting what came to be known as the Rotary Club’s “Polio Plus” campaign, a project that began in 1979. Since the onset of the campaign, 99.99 percent of the world is no polio-free. Rotary International owes this victory over polio to Filipino Rotarians.
Today, under the leadership of Rotary Club of Manila President Joaquin ‘Jack’ Rodriguez, the club is campaigning for more tree-plantings, stopping global warming and climate change, and balancing ecology and promoting “environment restitution.”
Rodriguez seeks to fight against environmental degradation in the Philippines and said the country lacks around 3.6 billion trees. His program, The Rotary Economic and Ecological Stratagem (TREES), has the support of 10 Rotary International districts and 231 individual Rotary Clubs, with District Governor of Rotary International District 3810 Liza Vicencio Elorde also pledging her support.
According to the club president, TREES is not just an opportunity to plant trees but for the public to help care for them and ensure they thrive.
TREES is an ambitious program; however, Rodriguez said an important facet is that Rotarians and their “partners in service” have taken the first step to realize their “collective dream.”
If the “polio plus” campaign helped countless children around the world, TREES is expected to work out a miracle amid a dying world again. There will be a cleaner environment, cleaner water, and more tolerable temperatures because of more trees.
