By Dominique Gabriel G. Bañaga

Outgoing Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. led the flag-raising ceremony yesterday morning at the Capitol Park and Lagoon in Bacolod City as part of the 121st Independence Day celebration.
He focused on the issue of poverty, pointing out, “marginalized sectors” are not yet “freed from the bondage of poverty.”
“121 years ago our leaders [were] fighting for freedom and, today, we are still fighting from the bondage of poverty,” he said.
Meanwhile, incoming Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, the current vice governor, discussed bravery.
“What we lack in technology we make up [for] in heart, blood, sweat, and tears,” he said “Our fighters fought against our enemies and, indeed, they excelled.”
“From Lapulapu to Jose Rizal, the Filipinos have shown extraordinary bravery in the most difficult of circumstances,” the governor-elect added.
Also in attendance members of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines; provincial government employees and officials; Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office director, Police Colonel Romeo Baleros; Philippine Coast Guard-Bacolod station commander, Lt. Commander Rockcliff Buling; and 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, Brigadier General Benedict Arevalo./DGB, WDJ
