The United States won both the men’s and women’s divisions of the 2019 FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup, which came to a close last Friday at Sukhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar. The Philippines girls’ 3×3 basketball team, however, was eliminated in the quarterfinals following a 21-12 loss to China.
China opened the game with a 5-0 edge and, despite Camille Clarin getting one in for the Philippines, the Chinese side widened their lead to 7-1.
Back-to-back baskets by Ilongga player Ann Pingol got the Philippines as close as four points but China managed to pull away to a 14-8 advantage with under three minutes left.
The score narrowed to a 15-12 lead for China, when they pulled away with the victory. They eventually advanced to the semifinals, where they lost 21-15 to New Zealand.
Meanwhile, the US dominated both the men’s and women’s divisions with the Americans beating Turkey in the men’s final, 16-12; and defeating New Zealand in the women’s competition, 19-13./ASC, WDJ
